Introduction

On 20 Oct 1674 Hendrick Peter Ketelaers appeared before the magistrate of the town of Veghel with Dirksken Aerdt van Eerdt, daughter of Aert Teunis Olislager alias van Eerdt and Lijsken Michiel Donkers. It started a new chapter in the history of the Ketelaars family.

In his previous life, in Nuenen, he was married, and may have had children, but by 1687 he clearly was a widower without children by his first wife. He settled his affairs in Nuenen, never to return there again.

V Hendrick Peter Ketelaers alias van Nuenen
Hendrick Peter Ketelaers was the son of Peter Hendrick Jan Cuijten alias Ketelaers (IV) and Maria Jan Truijen. He was baptized in Nuenen on 27 Feb 1642 and died in Veghel on 11 Jan 1704. He married Jenneke Jan Henrick Cuijten, daughter of Jan Hendrick Cuijten and Maria Peters. As a widower he moved to Veghel, where he married Dirksken Aerdt van Eerdt, daughter of Aerdt Teunis Olieslagers alias van Eerdt and Lijsken Michiel Donckers. The second marriage took place in Veghel on October 20, 1674. There were apparently no children by his first wife. Although he lived in Veghel, he continued to transact business in Nuenen.

During the several generations of our family in Nuenen they were sometimes called Ketelaers and continued to be referred to as Cuijten. Shampers notes that in his transactions involving the move from Nuenen to Veghel, Hendrikus is consistently referred to as Ketelaers. It is ironic then that in Veghel his family is most often referred to as “Van Nuenen”. His family was on the poor lists onwards since 1695, which means that they could not pay the usual taxes.

From a genealogical point of view, the family did well. Almost half of today’s carriers of the name Ketelaars are descended from him, through his son Peer.

Hendrick bought arrable land from Jenneke, the widow of uncle Pauwels on 29 Apr 1683. On 16 May 1687 he sold all his goods to his brother in law, Michiel Aerts. On the same day he declared his distance from certain goods in favour of his brothers in law and sisters. He then settled all his affairs in Nuenen and moved forever to Veghel, where he already had three children.

Note that all living Ketelaars, belonging to this family, are descended from one of these 13 grandchildren of Peer. Peer is one of Hendrick's sons.

V.1 Ariaen Ketelaers
Ariaen was the son of Hendrick Peter Ketelaers (V) and Dirksken Aerdt van Eerdt. He was born about 1678 and died before 1728. He was probably named for his grandfather on his mother’s side, Aerdt Teunis Olislager alias van Eerdt. He married Catharina Willem Hendrix, and had no children by her. On 8 Sep 1715 he married Cornelia Joost van de Poll with whom he had four children. When his father Hendrikus died in 1704 Ariaen became guardian of his brothers and sisters. In the poor list of 1718 both Ariaan, his wife Cornelij, their daughter Marij and farm hand Jan and maid Lijsken are on the poor list.

V.2 Lijsken Ketelaers
Lijsken was the daughter of Hendrick Peter Ketelaers (V) and Dirksken Aerdt van Eerdt. She was born about 1682 in Veghel and was named for her grandmother on her mother’s side, Lijsken Michiels Donkers. It is known that she married Dirk Willem, however, no children are known. She was godmother to four of her nieces and nephews.

V.3 Maria Ketelaers
Maria was the daughter of Hendrick Peter Ketelaers (V) and Dirksken Aerdt van Eerdt. She was born about 1685 in Veghel and was named for her grandmother on her father’s side, Maria Truijen. She died before 1701 when she is no longer listed in the poor list.

V.5 Jan Ketelaers
Jan was the son of Hendrick Peter Ketelaers (V) and Dirksken Aerdt van Eerdt. He was named for his maternal grandfather, Jan Cuijten. Jan was born in 1690 in Veghel and died before 1728. He married Maria Antonis van Rijbroek. They had three children:

  1. Theodora Ketelaers, born in Veghel on 2 Jan 1716. She married Henricus Adriani Boudewijns Boermans and had five children:

V.6 Maria Ketelaers
Maria was the daughter of Hendrick Peter Ketelaers (V) andDirksken Aerdt van Eerdt. She was born 1692 in Veghel. This is the second Maria in the same family. It is very unusual to name two children in the same family by the same name. On the 1695 poor list they both appear: Maria 10 and Maria 3. This can happen when two different grandmothers with the same name are to be honoured. In this case there are no other close relatives named Maria in evidence. There is one other confusion regarding this Maria: She appears once as the mother of a child Henrica. The father is Wilhelmus Gerardi van de Velde. The problem is, that the same Wilhelmus is named before and after the birth of Henrica, as the father of several more children, who have as mother Maria Antonii van Reijbroek. In the case of Henrica, one of the witnesses is Helena Henrici van Reijbroek. It may be a case of inaccurate record keeping on the part of the parish priest. Interestingly, this Henrica is born on a leapday:
  1. Henrica van de Velde, born in Veghel on 29 Feb 1732
V.7 Hendrina Ketelaers
Hendrina was the daughter of Hendrick Peter Ketelaers (V) and Dirksken Aerdt van Eerdt. She was born about 1695 in Veghel and married twice. Her first husband was Hendricus Lambertus van de Ven. With Hendricus she had one son. Her second husband was Jan Hermens van Boxel with whom she had two more children. Her three children are:
  1. Henricus van de Ven, born in Veghel on 17 Nov 1718
  2. Hermanus van Boxtel, born in Veghel on 12 Aug 1723
  3. Theodora van Boxtel, born in Veghel on 8 Aug 1725
V.8 Ariaan Ketelaers
Ariaan was the son of Hendrick Peter Ketelaers (V) and Dirksken Aerdt van Eerdt. He was born 1697 in Veghel. In the poor list of 1702 the younger Ariaan, aged 5 was mentioned together with his older brother Ariaan, who by then was 24 years old. He cannot be found in any later documents.
VI Peter Hendrick Ketelaers alias van Nuenen
Peer was the son of Hendrick Peter Ketelaers (V) and Dirksken Aerdt van Eerdt. He was born in Veghel on July 11, 1687 and died there on 2 Feb 1758. He was named for his grandfather on his father’s side, Peter Jan Cuijten alias Ketelaers. On Feb 2 1716 he married Anneken Henrick Olyslagers, daughter of Hendrik Adriaan Olislagers and Margarita Jan Schenkels. Anneken was born in 1692 and died in Veghel on May 26, 1744. Hendricus was the son of Petrus Ketelaers (VI) and Anneken Henrick Olyslagers. He was born in Veghel abt 1719 and died there on May 13, 1785. Since both his paternal and maternal grandfathers were named Hendrikus it is difficult to say for whom he was named. He married Anna Maria Hendricksdr. Teunissen in Veghel on May 3, 1744. She was born in Veghel abt 1720 and died there on April 18, 1795. They had five sons and one daughter.

  5. Anna Ketelaers was baptized in Veghel on 20 Jan 1756

  6. Hendricus Ketelaers was baptized in Veghel on 30 May 1759 When there are duplicate names, such as above, that usually means that the previous person has died. They were all named for their maternal grandfather, Hendrik Teunissen. It seems that only the last Hendricus did survive until adulthood. He married Dorothea Antonij van de Ven and had the following children:

    1. Anna Maria Ketelaars, born in Veghel on 27 Mar 1784 and died there on 24 Jul 1863. She married Jan van de Ven in Veghel on 21 Oct 1814. Jan was born in Veghel on 3 Feb 1787 and was the son of Antonij Lammert van de Ven and Josina van Lankveld. No children are known.

Jan was the son of Petrus Ketelaers (VI) and Anneken Henrick Olyslagers. He was born in Veghel on 20 Jul 1724 and died in Veghel on 28 Aug 1795. He was possibly named for his paternal uncle, Jan. On June 18, 1754 he married Deliana (Egidia) Daniels van Bergeijk, daughter of Daniel Peters van Bergeijk and Maria Teunisse van de Ven. She was born in Veghel on 26 April 1733 and died in Veghel on 12 March 1787.

In December 1758 Deliana inherited from her father one hectare of land, still under mortgage. This included a beer house with orchard, and a 1/4 hectare farm called “De Donk”. Part of this land (1/6 hectare) was rented out for 32 guilders per year.
On Nov. 8, 1770 Jan’s house was burned to the ground together with the barn containing hay, straw and two pigs. The damage was estimated at f 600,-,-. At this time his land had an assessed value of f  1000,-,-.

Nine children are known:
